What are the optimal conditions for insurance companies to prosper?

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
M curious asked:

There is no question the economic cycle affects insurance companies. When there’s less money around like now in the early 2009, insurance companies suffer.

But I learned that the more uncertainty about things, the better insurance firms perform, because they capitalize on uncertainties about the future. whether it’s a person’s life or natural hazards.

So my best guess for the question is a lot of cash flow in the market and a lot of uncertainty and fear about things for which they can be insured. Am I missing any thing else?

What can you say are optimal conditions for insurance companies to grow???

How much life insurance should we get?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
alicia asked:

My husband and I both work; our income split is about 60/40, he being the higher paid.

We will both turn 50 within the next year.

No children living at home.

No substantial debt:
Car loan: $185 monthly
Student loan: $102 monthly

Mortgage: $2,000 monthly

No other debt. We never carry a credit card balance.

We have about 3 months worth of savings in the bank.

Should I base our life insurance on how much we make, how much we have in debt or both? We are living paycheck to paycheck, and if either one of us were to die suddenly, the other would only have a few months to sell the house before we could no longer make the payments. In this market, I don’t think that’s realistic.

I was thinking that we would need enough to pay for a funeral, pay off the smaller two loans, and still have enough to live on for at least a year if the house doesn’t sell. Does that sound right? Or should we not worry about paying off the loans…just calculate enough to replace the other’s income for XX many months? If so, how many months should we plan for?

Finally, at what rate is life insurance taxed? Is it added to your income and then taxed at the rate for your total income for the year? or is there a flat rate tax? (I think I know the answer to this one, but I want to make sure).

What is the best way for us to pay for work that we need to have done by a contractor?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
VCL asked:

My husband’s mother died in March and we inherited her home. Since there is no mortgage payment, we are planning to move in this month. However, there is a lot of work that needs to be done. One of the first things is a retaining wall between his and the neighbor’s property is falling down and needs to be re-done. We talked with a contractor who has given us a bid of around $10,000 to take the wall down, excavate part of the back yard, put in gravel to make an off-street parking spot for our second car, build a new retaining wall and put up a privacy fence between the two houses. I am wondering about the best way to pay for it (with our economy the way it is today).
Details:
1. We have no personal debt, owe no credit cards, no loan payments, no car payments and now no rent or mortgage payments. Our only bills are the routine monthly utility bills.
2. Our combined take-home income is $3400 a month.
3. We have approximately $5000 in savings
4. His mother left him approximately $50,000 in IRA, money market account, savings bonds and life insurance.
5. We both drive cars that have over 100,000 miles on them and are 9 and 10 years old, and he found out last week his needs transmission work, so I think it would be better to replace the car, instead of doing the work.

I honestly don’t want to touch the money his mother left him, but would like to leave that for retirement savings.

In this economy, I think we need to leave the savings account alone.

I know we could afford a loan payment, but again, would that be the best thing to do?

Anyone have any good suggestions or advice on what, in our situation would be the best way to pay for the work that needs to be done?

Thanks for your imput.

Stock market?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009
two22bad asked:

I am interested in getting an internship during this summer dealing with stock market in general. However, while going through numerous internship websites, as well as job search engines, I became more and more lost. None of the categories were as clear cut as to say Brokerage Firm. Instead, I came across; Accounting Finance, Finance, Investment, Financial Services, Investment banking, ect. WHAT?! I just want to get an internship where daily vitality of the market matters, and decision have to be made due to that. Those options are not detailed enough for me to say, “Yes, that’s were I would like to be.” With my upcoming AA in business management, I understand that I will not be a broker; however, I just want to be around that environment. I am interested in getting to taste that line of work, also better understand the market in real life, enough with the books! I live in NJ, so lets not refer to NY, Chicago, or Philly.

What is best way to market Owners Selling Guns?

Saturday, December 27th, 2008
mrmjwilson asked:

I have recently added Owners Selling Guns to my Owners Selling Network. ( http://www.ownerssellingnetwork.com )

The network includes over twenty websites devoted to promoting everything from Owners Selling Cars to Owners Selling Real Estate. And we are very popular on the search engines for these search terms.

There are very restrictive rules concerning selling guns and each deal must be processed by a gun dealer

I guess my question is whether I should market this project directly to Owners Selling Guns or if I should build a national network of dealers… and then how… ?
