We need competition not between companies. We need competition on the business model used by companies. Currently, most US health care insurance companies make money on providing health care. The companies have more incentive to take your money and deny care when they can. Instead, they should make profits on size of their members. The companies can focus on getting members to join.

Both House Bill or Senate Bill will not bankrupt America.

Because they want to force everyone to buy insurance...look how everyone being required to have auto insurance was supposed to save us all money...prices only increased and now your required to buy...if there is a govt option and you are required to buy then there is incentive for insurance companies to lower their rates

Have I been missing the insurance companies all talking about how they need to lower costs and get health care under control. It has not happened. There are states that have a number of insurers and in case you haven't noticed, they are not lowering their prices to help the american people. Granted opening up cross state competition will help a little, but the government has to step in to actually get these health care costs to reasonable levels. #1 reason people had foreclosures was health care costs.

Yes, and the next time I need open heart surgery I will fly around the country shopping for the lowest bidder, or maybe opt out altogether.

Health care isn't a traditional supply /demand model... that's why it is open to exploitation and that is why it does need some government regulation (if not a public option).

We don't, but I think everyone who has studied the problem agrees that competititon will be the incentive that will lead to lower health insurance costs.

This can be done by having the government create an insurance company that competes nationally (bad idea).

Or it can be done, like you suggest, by breaking down some of the interstate monopolies and allowing interstate competition, in essence, putting the health insurance companies against themselves.

Where, in the Constitution of the United States, do you find the authority for the federal government to interfere in health care?

Why should I, as a taxpayer, be forced to pay for health care for fat people, drunks, junkies, smokers, tramps or baby factories? They choose their actions. They can pay the consequences.

Get the government out of the doctor's office and watch costs drop.

There are not federal limits on insurance crossing state lines. It is a state issue that many states already allow. My state being one. I have BCBS from the state next to the one I live in. The competitive factor is not in crossing state lines but in the limited number of companies offering insurance. Go get 5 quotes for health insurance, you'll find all 5 quotes are within $50 of each other. Price controls are obviously in effect by the industry. Health insurance in the US is under monopolistic control.

Wow that's not the America I live in. Where the hell are you at?

EDIT: You people are just really pathetic. The man has 8 years of sh*t to clean up how do you think he's going to do that in 7 months? I couldn't stand Bush and I'vee never been a republican and never voted for him but I had hopes that he would do good because even though I didn't agree with him he was my president. You people are so unpatriotic it's pathetic. Give the guy a chance. He is your president if you think not then you should probably look into moving to a different country

I can. Sorry. You forget how (un)insurance companies are puching up prices, blaming hospitals instead [5].

I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it?
Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2].
Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3].
FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage [4].
FACT – American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover [5].
FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet [6].
That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage.
If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.

No, it sounds pretty good and apparently works quite well in Singapore. As you pointed out, however, conservatives would have a fit. Conservatives would be displeased with any effective proposals for universal health care.

Every other developed country has universal health care with a variety of different systems. Not one of those systems appeals to conservatives because they are not interested in providing health care coverage to all Americans.
