Intellectual Property Release Agreement?

Electron asked:

I am graduating next week and have accepted a position with one of the big defense contractors. I work on many projects in my spare time and really enjoy it. I don’t know if I would ever want to market anything that I have designed but at least I have the option.

In order to begin working for this company, I need to sign an Intellectual Propery Release. Does anyone have any advise on standard terms or pitfalls?

Thanks!

One Response to “Intellectual Property Release Agreement?”

  1. If you plan to make patents or have other intellectual property, you need to carefully review the contract, perhaps have an attorney do it. Many companies will accept writing on the contract, or on seperate sheets that you attach, developmental areas where you are already working and can make patents. The areas need to be out of the company’s area of interest. Most agreements allow you to do patents outside of the company’s areas, but often allow the company to use for free if they wish. Good luck!
